Darling,

Maureen you are an angel and I love you and those book-type letters of yours. Just you wait and be-jeebers I’ll be writing over 20 pages with a bit of luck.

Saw the Messing Officer this today. He called me over and explained his future servery plans in detail. After listening to what he had to say I congratulated him on his fine work these past few weeks. He went all shy like a small boy, saying it was good to receive praise at last.

Darling,

Has been rather a hectic day today so was more than pleased to receive your (my) letter which always chases away the blues. Have been working fairly hard this past few weeks. The new Adjutant has been passing quite a lot of his work onto me. He is pretty hopeless at his job so he just passes the buck all the time. We are the only qualified persons for the job on the Squadron.

My dearest Maureen,

Life has been very interesting this past week in one way and another and it has really flown by. I attended an Entertainments Committee meeting down at the Squadron and everything went off pretty smoothly from my point of view because I was in one of my talkative moods and once I start there is no holding me (like most things.) It was a fair ole meeting and many suggestions were put forward (but I didn’t take the hint and leave) before we finalised a fancy-dress dance at Easter.

Maureen darling,

How about popping over next weekend for a few days? It will only cost you a hundred pounds return and I’m sure your dad can afford it. Well, perhaps not. It was just an expensive thought by a half-baked idiot but what a marvellous thought. Do you realise Mrs Blake that in 6 month’s time you will be in my arms again.

My Dearest Maureen,

Went to Messing meeting this morning and had an interesting time. It seems hard to believe but I spoke for nearly an hour bringing up various points ranging from the introduction of fresh fruit and fresh bottled milk to the daily menu, to the dirty state of the whole place. I carried on about the dirty plates, tables, floor etc and also requested that an old cutlery rinse be attended to as it stunk something ‘orrid.

I did also say how much the meals have improved since the new Catering Officer had been with us. He took the bait just fine and after that he agreed with everything I said. It’s good talking to the senior ranks on an equal footing.

My Dearest Maureen,

Am feeling a lot better today after a fabulous weekend. Late last night I tried to write you a letter but gave up after 4 pages because it didn’t make much sense once I had read it over. Not only that, the lads in our room have developed a good sense of comradeship this past month and last night they had their hands on some booze which was left over from the party Saturday.

My Dearest Maureen,

Hello darling! Have just returned from the pictures after seeing ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.’ It was a terrific film in my opinion. It’s the sort of film I would see again. The star, Albert Finney reminds me of Lawrence Harvey whom I regard as at the top. Did you see him in Room at the Top a couple of years back? That film was an education to me. Perhaps you can vouch for that if you’ve seen it – the film.

My Dearest Maureen,

It’s been a wet and very dismal week so far, but luckily it doesn’t affect me in any way – I’ve always disliked this ……..island. Life isn’t so bad though. In fact, we have some right old times now and again. The party next Saturday 18th should be fabulous, especially if yours truly has a few drinks.

My Dearest Maureen,

Feeling good today, health wise. Feeling bad, that wise. If you were here you wouldn’t stand a chance and we’d end up married by Easter so our first child wouldn’t feel embarrassed.

My Dearest Maureen,

Sorry about the delay in writing darling. This has been one of those weeks, been really shattered every night this past week. Just too many late nights I suppose. Today was about the first time this week that I’ve been to breakfast and remembered what I had eaten.

My dearest Maureen,

The trouble in your house is your poor dad is outnumbered by three to one. Poor man doesn’t stand a chance and when Lena comes, oh dear! He has had it completely, won’t be able to get a word in edgeways.

Went to see Psycho last night. It was very good with typical Alfred Hitchcock suspense.

Hello Maureen.

This is the ‘old bonfire’ reporting from Cyprus, feeling rather warm and passionate tonight so I thought if I can’t be with her then I’ll make do by writing. If that makes sense to you then kindly let me know – I’m lost.

My Dear Maureen,
I arrived back at camp late last night and found a marvellous 13 page letter under my pillow. It was just great. I don’t know how you manage to write so many pages – perhaps it is just another of your wonderful qualities. Your letters always leave me in a very good mood, so good in fact that my mates just say ‘how many pages?’ as they receive my cigarettes.

Hello darling,
Sorry about not writing these past few days but life has been rather hectic. I believe I told you that I may be going skiing, well that has now happened and I am sitting in a little hut stuck on Mount Troodos writing on a wonky old table. For some reason or other the Air Force has given me four days off to go skiing, not only that, the C.O. of the Squadron brought me and another guy all the way up here in his staff car. I felt dead chuffed as I pulled out of the Sqn gates. There was I reclining in the back seat taking steady drags at a cigarette and getting away from it all.

Hello!

All my mates have gone out tonight which is a good thing really for it enables me to sit down and write without being disturbed. All I can hear at the moment is my little clock plus the howling wind outside.

Had a pleasant surprise this morning and it was all due to another letter from you. It surprised me because I had only received your previous one yesterday. So now I have to reply to a total of 15 pages which is a big job for poor old me, still, I’ll do my best.

My dearest Maureen,

Hello! Thanks a lot for that marvellous letter of yours. It beats me how you manage to express yourself so well, but you do and I love every word of it.

I’m not so hot at writing so I have decided that if I write what happens each day then it’s pretty sure you will get more than a miserable 2 pages, so here goes.

My dearest Maureen.
Thanks for a really charming letter – terrific – I’ve read it a dozen times already. My last letter was rather short, I’m afraid, I was really tired at the time. It’s quite understandable isn’t it – yes – well, anyway since last writing I have been able to obtain a few nights’ rest and am rather more relaxed now but nevertheless terribly depressed because I am missing the one person in my life who is priceless – that’s you silly!

My dearest Maureen,
Thanks for your wonderful parting gift, I shall wear it always. When you gave it to me, words just didn’t seem to come and I felt near to tears so I had to rush off to save making a fool of myself.
When I left you I returned home and after the party was over, packed my case and finally getting my head down at 2 am. In spite of being dead beat I still found it difficult to sleep.
