My darling Alan,

And you really are a darling. The Valentine was wonderful. Honestly, I’ve never met anyone like you. All the other males I’ve ever known have never remembered any special dates, be they birthdays, monthly anniversaries or Valentine days. So, you may gather from that, that you have lost your bet. – or did you win it? I couldn’t make out which side you were on.

My Dearest Maureen,

It’s been a wet and very dismal week so far, but luckily it doesn’t affect me in any way – I’ve always disliked this ……..island. Life isn’t so bad though. In fact, we have some right old times now and again. The party next Saturday 18th should be fabulous, especially if yours truly has a few drinks.

My Dearest Maureen,

Feeling good today, health wise. Feeling bad, that wise. If you were here you wouldn’t stand a chance and we’d end up married by Easter so our first child wouldn’t feel embarrassed.

Darling Alan,

I honestly can’t think of anything interesting to write about. It’s always the same. Wednesday, when I didn’t have much time there was loads to tell you. Now I’ve got all evening I’m stuck.

My Dearest Maureen,

Sorry about the delay in writing darling. This has been one of those weeks, been really shattered every night this past week. Just too many late nights I suppose. Today was about the first time this week that I’ve been to breakfast and remembered what I had eaten.

Darling Alan,

We were talking about the RAF at work today. One of the girls’ husband used to go around finding the bodies of the pilots that crashed and take them back to camp. Now, why can’t you have an interesting job like that Alan! Thanks for those photos. I like the one of you on skis.

Darling Alan,

It has definitely been one of those weekends and I am feeling terribly sentimental and lonely so watch out for a very drooly letter.

I was ever so pleased that you mentioned the 4th in your letter. That is just something else to prove we think alike, cos I mentioned it as well – remember?

My dearest Maureen,

The trouble in your house is your poor dad is outnumbered by three to one. Poor man doesn’t stand a chance and when Lena comes, oh dear! He has had it completely, won’t be able to get a word in edgeways.

Went to see Psycho last night. It was very good with typical Alfred Hitchcock suspense.

My darling Alan,

I was so pleased to get your letter today. I have been worrying because I haven’t heard from you for a week. I knew you were going skiing last weekend and I have been imagining all the terrible things that might have happened to you.

I was being silly I know, but it really brought home to me how awful life would be if I never saw you again.

Hello Maureen.

This is the ‘old bonfire’ reporting from Cyprus, feeling rather warm and passionate tonight so I thought if I can’t be with her then I’ll make do by writing. If that makes sense to you then kindly let me know – I’m lost.

My Dear Maureen,
I arrived back at camp late last night and found a marvellous 13 page letter under my pillow. It was just great. I don’t know how you manage to write so many pages – perhaps it is just another of your wonderful qualities. Your letters always leave me in a very good mood, so good in fact that my mates just say ‘how many pages?’ as they receive my cigarettes.

Dearest Alan,
My mother has been sitting here ages talking to me about nothing in particular and I have been dying to write to you. I always wait ‘til everyone has gone to bed, then I can think of things without feeling as though everyone is reading my mind. That is a guilty conscience I suppose.

Hello darling,
Sorry about not writing these past few days but life has been rather hectic. I believe I told you that I may be going skiing, well that has now happened and I am sitting in a little hut stuck on Mount Troodos writing on a wonky old table. For some reason or other the Air Force has given me four days off to go skiing, not only that, the C.O. of the Squadron brought me and another guy all the way up here in his staff car. I felt dead chuffed as I pulled out of the Sqn gates. There was I reclining in the back seat taking steady drags at a cigarette and getting away from it all.

Darling Alan,
Please let me keep the photograph!!! It’s not that it is just a photo. It means more than that. It’s special because you gave it to me on a special day, you know what I mean. I won’t show it to anyone else if you hate it so much. I just want to keep it.

Hello!

All my mates have gone out tonight which is a good thing really for it enables me to sit down and write without being disturbed. All I can hear at the moment is my little clock plus the howling wind outside.

Had a pleasant surprise this morning and it was all due to another letter from you. It surprised me because I had only received your previous one yesterday. So now I have to reply to a total of 15 pages which is a big job for poor old me, still, I’ll do my best.

My darling Alan,

Isn’t it awkward to think of something to start off a letter? I’ve given it up so I’ll just have to tell you what’s been happening and why, when, how and which etc, straight away.

If this letter seems a bit funny to you it’s not your eyes it’s just that my head is none too clear at the moment. I got back from a party about half hour ago and just to make sure that you know I didn’t forget you the whole evening, I thought I would write at the first opportunity I got.
