Dear Diary

As Michael is going on holiday tomorrow we went out this evening.  To the Sports Club again and again I caused a stir.  We were sitting in a corner talking and everyone who came in turned and looked, then looked again.  Michael said the same faces are there week after week and a new one attracts a lot of attention.

Darling,

Your letter came as rather a shock, yet strangely enough I am not annoyed with you in any way.  Although we may have stopped writing to each other I am sure our love is still there, perhaps hidden for a few months.

Cinema tonight.  Not a very good film I thought.  ‘Facts of Life’  Bob Hope and Lucille Ball.  Michael enjoyed it and as he paid I suppose that was fair enough.

He asked if I’d got an answer from Alan and seemed pretty pleased when I said I hadn’t.

Dear Diary,

Had tea at Michael’s house.  I do like his family.  You can tell that they put on no special airs because they don’t sit and try to entertain you.  It makes it so much easier to be natural and to fit in when people aren’t particularly trying to be pleasant.

Michael took me to the Sports Club after tea.  I gather this was pre-arranged as no one seemed surprised when we walked out.

Dear Diary

I had a half day from work today and this time it is my turn to take Michael out.  I have been working furiously on my blue dress all week and finished it in time to wear tonight.  I felt fabulously smart.

Dear Diary,

Michael came to the house to play records.  I told him I had written to Alan and he looked so grateful and was so sweet about it that I felt really pleased that I had.

Alan dear,

I’m in a hell of a mess, I really am.  I’m sorry I can’t write the usual chatty letter.  I don’t think my mind could concentrate on it.  I suppose you have begun to guess what is coming next.

Darling Maureen,

Had a fabulous time down in little ol’ Limasol last night.  Was feeling a bit depressed sitting in the billet and the Station Dance didn’t sound so attractive after all, so this ‘ere guy collects a few rusting airmen from the comfort of our ‘home’ and away we went.  We went to a bar called Andy Capps but we weren’t too keen on it there, so we moved on to the Supermarket.  This place was only recently built and boasts a fine club for members only.  However, we bowled in and ordered drinks.

Dear Diary

Michael took me to the Rag Ball at the ‘Tec.  I didn’t think much of the actual dance but then, we didn’t spend much time in there anyway.  It stated on the tickets that no pass-outs were allowed so, of course, we had to have our drink beforehand.  We went into the Robin Hood pub and unfortunately ran into Matthew and the immortal Crooks whom I have heard so much about, with his girlfriend

The recent excitement on the world scene centres on our friend Dr Castro in dear ol’ Cuba.  So far he says he is beating the rebels.  The rebels of course insist they are winning and are sending aircraft over Havana to drop a bomb here and there.  Personally I think that Castro has the power to crush them but am hoping that it doesn’t turn out that way.  He is reported to be a ruthless character who believes in that latest sport – ‘firing squad’.

Darling,

Anyone for tennis?  And all that jazz.  This afternoon yours truly took up his racquet for a few sets of this large type ping-pong game.  It was pretty good as well, in fact we quite enjoyed it and have made arrangements for a further game later this week.  It was fairly warm so we discarded our white shirts so as to catch some more suntan on our pink bodies.  ‘We,’ meaning Cliff and myself, played three sets which lasted over one and a half hours all together.  Mind you, we weren’t so fit by then.  Felt like dropping sometimes but it was a good game.  I think that I have played more tennis than him.

Dear Diary,

After spending most of the day thinking about what to say to Michael re writing to Alan, it was a great relief when he went home without mentioning the subject at all.  Maybe it was for the best that he didn’t because I still don’t know what to say or, which is more important, what to do.

Salutations oh Great Master of the …..?’

That’s as original as they come!

Now, this will really have to be shorter than usual cos I’m trying so hard to be a good girl and go to bed early.  Well, actually I didn’t get there until 1 o’clock last night and I’m dead tired.  Let’s just give the old brain a few more seconds to tick over and I’ll be well away.

Dear Diary,

Michael took me to the quaintest little club.  Very nice place with a charming atmosphere.  The shock came when I was saying goodnight to him outside my house.  He asked me to stop writing to Alan.  He said he liked me and he wanted to take me out but as things are he just feels as if he is filling in time.

Darling,

Have just got myself a jug of Ovaltine and will now try to write 20 pages or so. (says I with tongue in cheek).  It’s gonna be awkward because this boyo hasn’t a clue what to write about.  I suppose you must have gathered that by now.  I do try to write as many pages as possible about nothing in particular.  Reckon it must be good training in case the Daily Mirror require my services as their editor or something.

Hiya Honey!

Boy, am I glad to be writing to you.  That sounds a bit funny, I’ll explain.  I developed a guilty conscience about the letters I had to answer and I’ve really been getting down to it tonight.  My arm’s absolutely dropping off.  Most of the time I’ve just been sitting here trying to think of something to write.  Then when I do think of something I have to translate it from my own special type of grammar to the sort of English they’d understand.

Dear Lena,

First, I must apologise for not answering your letter sooner.  It is simply ages since I have written.  I am sorry.

My family have all gone to bed but as I have a day off work tomorrow I have decided to stay up late and catch up on all my letter-writing while the house is peaceful.

Dear Diary,

Went to see ‘Carry on Regardless’.  I thought it was very funny, but Michael didn’t think much of it.  Nor did Carol and Clive who we met in the foyer, which was quite disappointing for all concerned!

Darling,

Hello Maureen.  How are you today?  Recovered from your exhaustive weekend I hope.  Don’t suppose you could have been more tired as I was first thing Monday morning.  Suppose it’s my own fault for playing too much football on Sunday.

Monday was quite a day because the kind sergeant was good enough to let yours truly have the afternoon off.

Hello Darling,

I haven’t really got anything interesting to tell you so I’ll have to start thinking up sly ways to fill space.  I’ll start by answering your last letter I think.

Pause, while I go and get it.

That story about Mike and the Canadian girl went around the office and everyone thought it was dead comical.  So did I.  I wondered what on earth you were leading up to when I read it.  I found out.

Dear Diary,

After Carol and I spent all week planning how we could both manage to go to the Lambourne we both end up at the Winter Hall, East Ham.  Had a marvellous time.  Roger and Joan, friend and fiancée of Michael’s were there.  Michael asked me about Alan and I told him how long I had known him etc. and showed the photos I have.
