June 14th 1961

Dear Lena,

Thank you very much for your letter.

As I have promised, I have taken a photo of myself wearing what I will wear when I meet you.  (I only hope it is a warm evening.)  I’ve also sent you a piece of material left over when I made the suit.  I thought this might make it easier for you to find me if there are a lot of people about.  I know I always notice colours before faces.  It really is a terrible photo, I hate it but as I’ll have to wear my glasses I thought I had better put them on for it.  I think I look about thirty and a typical English school mistress in it.  Horrible!  Never mind.  You will be able to judge for yourself soon.

I told you about my friend Jean who was coming to Dorset with us, didn’t I? She has had to cancel her holiday because she has changed her job and cannot get the week off she wants.  She is very disappointed about it all.  When I knew you were coming over, I had to write to the holiday camp and change our double chalet for a treble.  Now Jean is writing to change it back to a double.  They will wonder what is going on.

Last week I thought it was about time I did something about our transport to Dorset so I got lists of prices for a coach and a train.  A coach journey is very much cheaper so I have bought 2 coach tickets for us.  I hope you don’t mind travelling by coach.  Two girls in my office went by coach last year.  They said we will pass through some lovely countryside but the journey is very long, six hours.  There is another problem too, we will have to be at Victoria (London) Coach Station at 8.30.  That means we will have to leave my house about 7 am.  So long as it is saving us money I don’t mind.  I hope you don’t.

Will you write and tell me the time of your arrival once more.  In you last letter you said you will leave Copenhagan at 17.30 and the journey to London is 3 hours.  But in the one before you said you leave at 17.00 and arrive at Gatwick I hour later.  I would like to make really sure as I don’t like the idea of having to wait around for 2 hours.  It is Gatwick airport, isn’t it?  Gatwick is a few miles south of London and London airport is SouthWest.

My sister is 12 years old on the 25th of this month.  She is looking forward to coming to the airport to meet you as much as I am but as we will not get back to my house until about 10.30pm my mother thinks it is rather late for her to be out.

Only 7 more weeks until August 4th!
